On July 10, 2025, the Miami City Commission took a bold step forward—authorizing the addition of Barry University, Nova Southeastern University, and the seven (7) Technical Colleges at Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) to the Venture Miami Scholarship Program.

Since 2022, the fund has helped Pell Grant–eligible City of Miami residents close the tuition gap at our local partner schools, which already include Florida International University, Florida Memorial University, Miami Dade College, St. Thomas University, and the University of Miami.

This latest expansion with the M-DCPS Technical Colleges, however, reflects more than access to education—it’s a clear recognition that blue-collar tech is foundational to Miami’s innovation economy.

Reframing the Future of Tech

When most people imagine the future of tech, they picture code, AI labs, and startup culture. But here in Miami, we understand a deeper truth:

Innovation isn’t just coded. It’s constructed.

From smart buildings and clean energy to autonomous transportation and advanced air mobility, the technologies reshaping our world rely on skilled, certified professionals working behind the scenes.

That’s blue-collar tech—and it’s time we call it what it is: mission-critical infrastructure for the digital age.

What Is Blue-Collar Tech?

Blue-collar tech blends traditional skilled trades with modern technology. These roles combine hands-on experience with tools like IoT diagnostics, automation systems, robotics, and networked infrastructure.

Whether it’s:

  • HVAC specialists using smart climate control tools,
  • Welders fabricating parts for electric vehicles,
  • Avionics techs maintaining the next generation of aircraft, or
  • Network administrators securing the city’s digital backbone,

they are all part of the tech workforce.

These careers are not “alternative paths”—they are essential jobs driving the smart cities, clean energy systems, and advanced mobility that define the future.

What’s New: Certifications Funded by the Venture Miami Scholarship

Why It Matters: Skilled Trades Are Essential to Smart Cities

Miami’s future as a global innovation hub depends on more than digital dashboards and data analytics. It requires real-world implementation—by skilled workers who turn blueprints into reality.

Think about it:

  • Electricians install EV charging stations and solar systems.
  • Network admins secure smart buildings and municipal Wi-Fi.
  • Aviation techs maintain electric aircraft for the Advanced Air Mobility sector.
  • HVAC pros keep data centers and hospitals energy-efficient.

These are not support roles. These are frontline careers in the innovation economy.

Where It’s Happening: Miami-Dade County Public Schools Technical Colleges

With job placement rates exceeding 80%, the seven fully accredited M-DCPS Career and Technical Education (CTE) Colleges are setting a national standard for workforce-driven learning.

At institutions like George T. Baker Aviation Technical College, students are mastering aviation systems that directly support Miami’s Future of Mobility vision and the emergence of a regional Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) ecosystem.

These schools aren’t training for yesterday’s jobs. They’re preparing the human infrastructure that makes the future work.

A Talent Pipeline Built on Equity and Scale

The expansion of the Venture Miami Scholarship Fund supports a broader vision:
A full-stack, inclusive workforce strategy that prioritizes:

✅ Education aligned with employer demand
✅ Seamless pathways from K–12 to career
✅ Access to apprenticeships and hands-on training
✅ Removal of financial barriers to high-value certifications

We’re ensuring that Miami residents—from all communities—have real pathways into tech-driven careers, without the burden of debt or relocation.

Closing: Built by Us. For Us.

Miami’s innovation economy is growing fast—but growth without inclusion is unsustainable. Through our continued investment in blue-collar tech and workforce development, we’re not just preparing for the future—we’re building it.

Because real innovation isn’t just disruptive—it’s equitable, practical, and powered by people.

And in Miami, we’re making sure the people who build the future come from right here at home.
