In my lifetime, I’ve watched the phone I once carried—a bulky brick with a single function—transform into a sleek device that now connects me to the entire world in real time. I’ve seen phone booths disappear from street corners, only to reappear in offices as privacy pods for virtual meetings.
These may seem like small changes, but through these sobering eyes, they reflect something far greater: the world turned upside down.
We are living in a brave new world—a time when the rules of work, learning, and value creation are being rewritten in real time by artificial intelligence. And I say this not only as a technologist or economic development professional, but as someone who has called Miami home his entire life.
What’s happening here right now is different. It’s historic. And it’s ours to claim.
Miami Is Rising—Fast
The newly released StartupBlink Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2025 confirms what many of us already feel: Miami now ranks 28th globally, with the fastest growth rate of any U.S. city in the global top 50—an impressive 28.5%.

While other American cities are losing ground, Miami is gaining momentum, outpacing emerging tech hub peers like Chicago, Denver, Seattle, and Raleigh Durham. And that momentum is being fueled not just by hype, but by a growing ecosystem of founders, investors, and builders who see Miami as a place where bold ideas can take root.
But with great momentum comes great responsibility for ecosystem builders. We must ensure this growth is inclusive, sustainable, and future-focused.
A Revolution Without a Playbook
This AI-driven economic revolution is unlike any the world has seen before. In the past, we had decades to train new workers for factory floors or to learn coding languages. Today, AI is accelerating faster than our traditional systems can adapt.
One founder with the right tools and the right idea can now launch and scale a company with a fraction of the staff once required. We are entering a reality where a billion-dollar company could be built with one employee and a cloud of algorithms.
If we’re not intentional, this new era could widen existing economic disparities. But if we act wisely, it can lift up entire communities.
Education Must Be Reimagined
This moment calls on educators to move beyond the classroom as we know it. We need to reimagine instructional learning—embracing personalization, adaptability, and lifelong access.
We must:
- Build adaptive, AI-powered platforms that tailor learning to the individual.
- Offer short-cycle, stackable credentials aligned to today’s and tomorrow’s labor markets.
- Make entrepreneurship, AI fluency, and digital literacy central to the curriculum.
- Nurture creative, ethical, and systems thinkers—not just software users.
We must also recognize the essential role of blue-collar workers in this revolution. Electricians, fiber installers, drone technicians, HVAC specialists, mechanics, construction crews, and infrastructure specialists are the unsung heroes who will literally build the future. They lay the fiber for our 5G connectivity, install and maintain EV charging infrastructure, and ensure the safety and operability of smart buildings.
As cities like Miami evolve into smarter, more connected environments, the skilled trades become even more vital. This new era of infrastructure demands both digital savvy and hands-on technical skill—and it’s creating new career pathways for a tech-enabled, blue-collar workforce.
Our workforce strategy must champion these workers as essential architects of our innovation economy.
Economic Developers Are Educators, Too
As the leading economic development department for the City of Miami, we have become more than conveners—we are curators of opportunity. We serve as a bridge between education, workforce, capital, and policy. We complement the formal education system by:
- Making STEM education accessible through the Venture Miami Scholarship Fund, helping close the equity gap for Pell-eligible students.
- Launching the AI Digital Twin Accelerator, which gives entrepreneurs the opportunity to deploy and test solutions in a real-world, city-integrated environment.
These notable efforts enable residents to become not just employees—but builders, creators, and innovators in their own right; and this is just the beginning. In a world where AI will touch every industry, our role is to provide resources and opportunities for those inclined to pursue their dreams.
InvestMiami: Fueling the Future
InvestMiami is one of our most powerful tools to ensure that innovation is not only born here—but funded and grown here. The program is designed to unlock capital and direct it with intention toward transformative projects and people.
- For tech founders, InvestMiami serves as a high-visibility onramp into global venture capital and strategic corporate partnerships.
- For real estate innovators, it facilitates connections to capital aligned with smart infrastructure, mixed-use developments, and housing solutions that support inclusive growth.
- For international investors, it offers a streamlined path to engage with vetted opportunities across Miami’s high-growth sectors.
Initiatives like the Opportunity Zone Summit serve as key convenings to spotlight underutilized neighborhoods, catalyze impact-driven investments, and promote collaboration between developers and community stakeholders.
And through events like the Future of Mobility Summit, we bring together leading innovators, infrastructure providers, and capital partners to explore the economic, environmental, and workforce implications of next-generation transportation. This summit is not just about showcasing innovation—it’s about anchoring it in Miami’s future economy, connecting the builders of tomorrow with the resources they need today.
Together, these programs ensure that capital does more than chase returns—it builds legacies, lifts communities, and accelerates innovation where it’s needed most.
Carpe Diem: Miami’s Moment to Lead
As a lifelong resident of this city, I’ve seen Miami rise, fall, and rise again. I’ve lived through cycles of change. But this moment feels different. We are not just reacting to global trends—we are shaping them.
Carpe diem—seize the day.
We have the tools. We have the talent. And now we have the data to prove we’re ready.
This is not just a chance to grow. It’s our chance to lead!
